From what I've read, Special Effects is one of the best hair dyes out there, but I've also read that it runs like an Olympian. In the shower, in the rain, on your pillow. So how much experience have those of you who use SFX had with running? How long does it take to stop? Will it really get on the wall if you put your head there?
And since this will be my first time dyeing my own hair (I've had it done professionally but I can't afford that again), does anyone have any tips?

The problem is this: As you know, creative people have these *surges* of intense ideas - and have this need to *do this RIGHT NOW* kind of thing! (Don't want to order anything online.) In my area, the only products in stores are the Clairol, Revlon, etc. boxed hair dyes.

Is it a waste to try a white-ish blonde dye on my darker hair, or is it that they bleach your hair first at a salon, then make you blonde? What product can I get to make my dark hair blonde, that is available at the drugstore?

I've been using punky color semi-permanent green hair dye forEVER and now it looks like it's becoming harder and harder to find! :( I would hate to have to change colors, or, even worse, go back to my natural color. Does anyone know a good, reliable supplier on the internet that they would recommend?

Or, as another resort, I was thinking about learning to make my own hair dye in my own favorite custom color -- can anyone point me in the right direction?

Thanks!
My problem is that I have naturally thin fine hair. I've been dying it a yellow blonde for a long time. And I have about an inch of dishwater blonde coming in.
I was wondering, does anyone have any suggestions for a dying pattern or color? I've got leftover Manic Panic Atomic Turquoise and After Midnight Blue. My last color was the turquoise on the tips.
Should I bother to dye the roots first? I'd like to avoid too much bleach. Can people with thin hair pull off the layered dye look?
Oh, and my hair is about waist length, if that makes a difference.
I'd surely appreciate any help you could provide.

well - so per my previous post I went to my hairdresser on Friday. After color remover and bleach - the red came out, so my hair was ready for purple. She'd heard good reports on some new pigment colors and bought red and blue to make a custom shade of purple.

Well I ended up with a more Sangria-like shade :-( It soaked up the red - even though the dye was a vibrant blueish purple. The roots ended up almost fushia! She then did the roots Special Effects Blue Haired Freak and they're more purply. After a small fortune and 6 hours at the salon I still don't have my hair the vibrant purple I wanted.

Last night I used 50 / 50 special effects Wildflower & conditioner mix and left it on for about 10 minutes - it didn't help much. We're headed to Convergence on Thursday and I really want fab purple for it.

Any suggestions on what i can do to make it less purply-pink and more true purple? am i better off blue-ing over the whole thing or purpleing it?

Heya! So first up, a big shout-out to Ms. Sugarbunni, the original alpha female whom I met at BM this year at the very end of the festival. Been meaning to say hi, but I figure this will be as good a place to do it belatedly as any. so there you go.

Okay, onto the subject at hand. So I've become increasingly interested with the complexity of shaved patterns and lines in hair. I've mainly been inspired by the wondrous Isa Psybiote of Phoenix, whom some of you may know from the S&M/fetish/transhumanist scenes. Amongst many other things, she's also very fashion-forward with the 'do, as you can see:

http://www.psymbiote.org/

Then of course, there's Patricio, whom some of you may know, who does the same thing with his facial hair, and it looks great on him.

So anyhoo, I decided to take a bit of inspiration from them with this new 'do.

For this, I was assisted by Jesselynn Desmond, my pal and friend who's also on my friends list here on tribe. It took two days total to pull this off - one for the haircut and shaving, the other for dying. Jesselynn is a fun and exuberant human being and it's always a joy to see her in her environment no matter what the reason, so the process was just as fun and as memorable as the results were.

The pictures are saved in the expHAIRiments war chest under the name HAIRoglyphics. Most of it was dyed using Clairol Hydriescence, and the tips, which were already bleached from a previous job were done up with Special Effects maroon. There was a strand that was also dyed yellow, maroon and dark blue, which you can also see. And the shavings extend down into the back of my head.

It's gonna be tough touching this one up, but for now, I love it. Hope you do, too.

The way I accomlish that is that there are a few bleached-white streaks in it, plus I have the bottom few inches bleached, and then I slather the whole thing with purple dye every 6-8 weeks.

Once a year I have the ends cut off and have the bleach job redone. The first year I had it done at Transformer in the lower Haight, and they did a decent job but I didn't like the feel of the shop. Last year's redo was at a place in Vegas, and I was pretty happy with it but I'm not going down there just to get my hair done.

Wondering if anyone is local (Oakland/Berkeley) and would like to do a swap (I'll do your roots if you do mine)? I'm doing mine tonight or tomorrow after work and will try my close friends first, but maybe next month I'll have more options?

Because I can be a color slut (always changing) and because my hair grows extraordinarily fast
(buzz cut to the tip of my bum in 3 years flat) I was delighted, recently to discover that Manic Panic has a new brand of temporary color that goes on almost like paint and it is incredibly bright under black light (I'm also a UV slut......lol).

One doesn't even have to bleach their hair because the color literally covers the hair.

And, with the exception of any colors with red in them, it will wash completely out in five minutes.

Only drawbacks are it makes a bit of a helmet of your hairstyle (although not visually) but then I am into using really heavy spiking gel anyway so that's cool, too.

I'm sure the hair color police won't be to enamored of it because it's just too easy to use, but I love it.

It even comes in a very rad platinum/white version that you almost need sunglasses for under a black light.

Well, just thought a guy should post here.

enjoy, color on.
I jsut got my hair all short and spikey, I like it a lot. But Ive also planned out my next two hair styles, both of which involve synthetic hair. I think my next one is bright red dreads, or if I can find a place that does it, silky dreads. Recommendations on salons or people, anyone?
