Does anyone have any recommendations for a medium grape-y purple hair dye? It seems that most purples I've tried some out really dark. I've tried mixing Manic Panic purple and lavender to lighten it up, but it comes out kinda fuschia purple. Maybe I'm not bleaching my hair light enough?

Many many years ago, I tried a squeeze bottle of Violet Moon Punky Color. It came out a medium bluish purple, and quickly faded to a nice lavender that I really adored with all the old, washed out, beloved blue jeans I was wearing at the time. All the other purples I've tried over the years have been way dark and made me look deathly pale, as well as tinting my skin purple for days. I never tried the Violet Moon again (I trade colors a lot, but tend more towards reds and greens), so I couldn't tell you if it was a bum bottle or if it always works that way.

I'd say more bleach (always more bleach), then try a medium purple like Special Efffects "wildflower". Leave it in for less time than you normally do, then adjust with some watered-down blue or pink if necessary to get the exact shade you want.

For skin-tinting: Punky Colors makes a color remover that really works on skin. The active ingredient is nonoxynol-10, though, which makes me wonder if I shouldn't just be rubbing spermicide on my hairline. Maybe next time...

I put vasoline along my hairline to keep from ending up with any stains.

That's not my problem when it comes to purple. It just runs everywhere when I get in the shower, and I wind up purple all over. It just seems to like my skin. Other colors I can completely screw around and spread them on my face with a putty knife and they'll usually wash right out.

I used to do the vaseline thing, but I'm a klutz and I have a lot of long hair, which means I'd end up getting vaseline in my hair, and have under-dyed spots.

I've never figured that out either.......which is largely why I've been in this temp color thing lately.

also, I've found, viz a vis, purples, that a lot of the dyes out there tend to look reddish on my hair (I'm mean a reddish shade of purple) and those are actually my least favorite shades of purple.

I've had some success mixing midnight blue in with those dyes. You just need a little and you can put it on in layers for the multi-tone thingee.

I've also stumble on this thing of using the Punky Color UV temporary dies and instead of just pasting it on my hair, mixing it with some water and then running it through my hair like I would other kinds of styling gels.

the other night I got a rad purple (that nicely matched my purple leather bikers jacket and purple pleather docs) and I used an extremely small amount of temp dye.

It's making me want to buy several colors and trying out different cominations........they wash right out (with a little bit of pink left with anything that uses red.

but hey, pink is the new black and i have bright pink hi tops so, fuck it

            color on!
