I've heard that Special Effects and Fudge are both really good and comperable when it comes to bright colors. Anyone have any further insights on that or other products that rock?

I've had better luck with Special Effects, but have friends who prefer Fugde (which washes right out for me). I also prefer bottled Punky Color to what comes in the little tubs, but geez, it's been so long since I've dyed my hair that I don't even know if they make the stuff anymore! I think it depends so very much on the health and texture of the hair you're putting it on as well as how you're applying it that it's really hard to say which is better.

I've also found that with SFX, the color gets really muddy if I apply a whole lot, even though most of the advice I've read has said to really load it on (trying to sell more?). I do better just using enough to wet all my hair, and reapplying every few weeks, than dumping on a whole load at once. Maybe I'm just really high maintenance.

I really like Special Effects also. I find it makes a tremendous difference on how long the color stays bright if you bleach your hair first - I have black hair, and the parts that were bleached to blonde retain color at least 4 times longer than the parts that were just bleached to reddish brown.

I can't hold the bright semi-perm colors no matter how much I bleach my hair. I'm apparently plagued with healthiness. If I don't bleach, I hold absolutely no color at all. If I bleach twice in a row with 40 vol, I can make it for a few weeks before I'm embarrasingly faded. Lately I've just given up, and have been back to my natural color for the first time in years. It's a little weird.

I'm still a die hard fan of Manic Panic and Punky Color in the tubs. I've had to use Special Effects and other brands when I haven't been able to find my color in MP or PC, and nothing works as well for me. It does seem that some of their colors work better than others, though.

Special Effects, absolutely. I used Manic Panic on and off for years, until a friend convinced me to use Special Effects. My currrent blue/red/purple (over bleached-blonde) is lasting *way* longer than I expected (the blue parts are almost a full month old, and still quite blue), and fading really gracefully.

Maybe there's a color-brand difference? Like some brands do some colors particularly well?

In any case, the Special Effects "Blue Velvet" and "Pimpin' Purple" are awesome.

Manic Panic reds tend to work pretty well on unbleached hair, in my experience. Manic Panic blues can sometimes fade all icky on bleached hair. Same with Fudge blues.

Related: anybody ever order from these guys? I like their color charts and selection. Haven't ordered yet, tho...

Funny, I just came across that site the other day. Their prices are really good.

I agree, Manic Panic has good reds, and hot pink; they dye well and last a long time, but their blues are pretty sucky. I have to give it SFX for this - my friend used to have the most gorgeous blue hair from SFX.

Liz, the purple in your photo is awesome - what kind is that?

It's Special Effects "Pimpin' Purple", of course :-)

The photo catches the shade pretty well (at least on a mac monitor). I had to up the saturation in Photoshop to get the image to match what my hair actually looked like in sunlight.

Although that pic isn't my current color. I'm all multi-colored now.

Speaking of hair - anyone have a favorite place to buy wigs? I need to have normal hair for a day soon (Got a grandmother visit coming up. I figure if you're 84, you get to see things that make you happy. And this hair will *not* make her happy.)

I've been using special effects for 2 years now, and it's actually the best I've come across. I can dye it and leave it till I have growout and need to bleach again (usually 2 months, because I'm lazy). Punky was the worst for me. My pink hair was orange before 2 weeks were up. bleh.

My hair is long and medium brown, and I bleach the ends (about 3") and a few streaks on top.

I then do the whole thing in Manic Panic Fuchsia Shock. (Wait, they misspell it Fuschia.) I've been using the creme (jars) for years, but recently switched to gel (bottles). The part that's brown fades away in a week or two, but the bleached parts stay pretty colorful for 4-5 weeks.

I'm much happier with the gel-- it doesn't spatter itself all over the bathroom, and it seems to last longer as well.

I had it done professionally in Vegas last April, and the stylist used something by Wella. It was reasonable, but wasn't quite the right shade.

I used Fudge several years ago, and wasn't the least bit impressed. Special Effects doesn't have quite the right flaming fuchsia color that I want.

Several years ago I had a couple of streaks of Punky Colors Atlantic Blue in my hair for a few weeks, and it just wouldn't go away. Six months later I had the streaks re-bleached... traces of blue survived the bleach!

My friend has long blonde hair and does the ends in purple/pink. Looks fantastic.

My Special Effects blue is starting to fade to a nice pastel. With the pink and purple bits, I kind of look like My Little Pony, though. This could be problematic soon.

Patti: Pictures? from me? or from who? I've got shots of the my-little-pony hair (when it was fresh) in my album. Just picture those shades fading to pastel (I really bleached the hell out of my brown hair) and you'll get the MLP effect.

I want pictures from you guys!! Upload, or tell us they're in your photo albums?

i've been using Punky in the tubes and prefer it 100times over Manic Panic. I haven't tried Fudge. SFX lasts long, like Punky but i've found that the SFX blues don't fade as nicely as the Punky blues. i don't use the SFX purples cuz none of them are dark enough. all on bleached hair of course.

another tip to lock in color... use a semi-permanent clear 2-3 weeks later or after at least 3 shampoo's to lock in the color. and don't shampoo often! i've found you can wet & rinse your hair then use a light conditioner instead of shampoo'ing and your color will last longer and your hair will feel clean. plus if you prebleached, conditioner without shampoo helps repair your hair.

Colored my blue/purple (5 weeks in and starting to fade too much) with Special Effects "blood red" today. Dang, that stuff really takes over other colors. I love it.

I agree with Puddin' about not shampooing too often. Especially if you've bleached your hair all to hell to get the color to take. Just a good hot-water rinse and light conditioner works great for me (every other day... non-gym days, essentially). Smells good, feels clean.

Wash more often and dye more often. My hair is absolutely disgusting if I don't wash at LEAST every other day, preferably every day. I just use less dye 'cause I know I'll wash it out anyhow, and redye every week or two as it fades. (I gave up on that plan for dreads... decided I could never stay away from shampoo long enough for them to lock up.)

i'm a total Special Effects junkie. i've used Raw brand color for some of their blues since Special FX blues tend to be a little more purple than i like.

the one tip i've found for keeping color fresh is putting some in your conditioner. it doesn't stop the fading altogether, but it does help things stay bright.

Color in your conditioner - smart idea! Question: do you end up with re-stained hands, doing that?
      • Re: let's talk color...

        Tue, October 14, 2003 - 10:23 AM
ya know, while i'm actually in the shower my hands look a little pink, but since i shampoo/condition my hair first and then clean all the other bits, the nahds are clean by the time i get out.

if you put too much color in the conditioner, your hands will stain, but generally not too much. we're talkin' a 1:8 or so ratio of color to conditioner. Special Effects is *so* concentrated and thick that any more than that is kinda unnecessary.

    hi, new here..

    i prefer punky color

i'm a hairstylist, and have a tip to keep bright colors in the hair:

when you go to shampoo the color out, don't rinse first...apply your shampoo directly to the color and work it in..this helps acidify it

also, rinse w/ cold water and use a good conditioner to close the cuticle of your hair

I agree, punky color and manic panic are great ...color results depend greatly on how long you pre-lighten .. closer to white, the less the yellow will interfere with your blues and purples and such. Non-complementary colors like red are obviously not affected too much though. Also remember they are a vegetable dye and really only stain the surface of your now(after bleaching)quite porous hair. Make sure to apply dry and leave on for as long as you can.

Oh yeah, skip a shampooing every so often to extend the life of your bright color. And never .. never use a drugstore shampoo. Cheap strong detergents are the cleanser in those.

Use a color steamer to process any of the punky color/manic panic/lariche stuff. It should last alot longer.
Wella makes a product called MAGMA. This rocks. Like bleach and tone in one step. Only reds and oranges, and blonde tones. It will lift out permanent color and it doesn't fade. At all!!
Elumen by Goldwell is permanent. Pinks, red, blue, purple, orange. They do not come out of the hair. Bleach doesn't touch it. You can only cover over it.

Ok, I'm obviously new to hair experimentation, just look at my pic hehe, and this tribe.
I would like to dye my hair bright obnoxious orange, I'm of Asian decent, so my hair turns kind of a burnt orange to begin with, any sugestions, or other colors you think might work.
    thanks!

Oooh, so many people of Asian decent can pull off blue/green tones that I with my pasty irish skin can't do at all. I always have to do at least some red tones around the edges of my face or I look dead.

So there's an element of living vicariously on my part, but maybe other people could chime in. Couldn't you see her with some blue or even turquoise streaks? You'll have to bleach the hell out of your hair, but that's why we have leave-in conditioner :-)

If you're sure you want orange, then I stand by what I've posted earlier - Manic Panic does the best oranges and reds. (Even though I still swear Special Effects does the best purples and blues.)

I could also see you with a multi-red/orange effect - stripe in a couple shades of red and orange - maybe emphasizing the ends? And since it's your first time, go for something creative and multicolored on purpose, so if you mess up a little it looks like you meant it :-)

        That's a splendid idea! Thankyou!
Interesting color combos there, I was also thinking about making wigs (i like doing tedious crafty things) to experiment with color as well.

What happens when you bleach your hair, dye it pink, let it fade to orange (I have black Asian hair) and then dye it a different shade of red?

You get a different shade of red that'll eventually fade to a more orangey-pink than it might have ;-)

Just keep layering the semi-permanent colors and don't switch to permanent without pro advice and you'll be fine.
