hi yall.. glad to have found this tribe. i'm an official hair color addict!
i've bleached my hair about a million times, and dyed my hair just about every color, and it's nearing time for my next exphairiment. i currently have very dark dark green and black hair, and i would normally reach for the 40 developer and bleach, but someone suggested that i try color remover, first. anyone ever tried it? in all my years of hair coloring, i always assumed nothing would do the trick except bleach, and that all other claims of color removal were a big lie.
sure would be cool if i could avoid the burning horribleness of the bleach!

Re: bleach or color remover?
Sat, July 24, 2004 - 7:20 PMWelcome Josie! Great question. I've often wondered the same thing, but never tried a color remover. I know there are several pro hair stylists in this tribe so hopefully someone will have some answeres! -

Re: bleach or color remover?
Sun, July 25, 2004 - 10:00 AMI have used it before--and it had the same result as bleach--meaning, it did not remove just the color from my unbleached hair--it stripped it...to a bad orangey blonde, and it was really muddled--different parts of my hair were darker, others were lighter. Bad. But this was maybe 8 or so years ago. Perhaps it's improved.
Don't know if it's any better from your hair than bleach, but if you are looking to strip your hair so you can color it again it might be ok.

Re: bleach or color remover?
Mon, September 6, 2004 - 8:55 PMI had a really bad experience with Effasol (a color remover) when used w/ developer.. literally fried my hair off. :) Perhaps someone has a recommendation for a different one? I found that using it with water rather than developer (as the instructions say one can do) worked very poorly on removing dark dyes.
One of the reasons I've been sticking with pinks and red tones is because of the harm done every time I've tried to remove colors with blue undertones... -

Re: bleach or color remover?
Thu, March 10, 2005 - 3:55 PMThis is an old post but I just joined so... to answer the question on hair color remover, I love it. It works though only on permanent color It does work on demi never tried it on semi package says not too. My experience as a professional I have only used Rusk. I swear it like dissolves the color away. My clients was a deep burgandy and wanted a platinum blonde and I used remover and one round of leach with low volume per. results were great. But most importantly her hair felt great after. Not so in my experience if you use bleach only. My experience with effesol was the same it's a nasty little product. Even in beauty school they advise against it. Very harsh on the hair. -

Re: bleach or color remover?
Thu, March 24, 2005 - 9:36 AMi'm with primp. color remover, to the best of my knowledge, only removes permanent color, and it works best when the color is fresh, less effective on an old color. at least this is my experience, with goldwell.
for semi permanent, you can make a shampoo/bleach/developer/conditioner concoction that will remove some semi permanent color, although i've found that raw and special effects are nearly impossible to get rid of.
