Ahh! Helmet hair...

So I decided to grow my hair out AGAIN, though this time it's cause I have the bright idea that I'm gonna grow dreads when it's long enough (any tips on how a white girl with ridiculously straight hair ought to go about such things would be appreciated). Meanwhile, I'm going through the horrible crisis of hair in that awkward inbetween stage and I can't really fix it with loads of product 'cause I can't bear the thought of putting a helmet on with my hair full of crap. Am I just stuck with the choice of looking like a reject from That 70s Show or covering it up with a bandana for the next 4 months? Or does one of you have a more brilliant idea?

I've had friends perm their straight hair, and get decent dreads (especially if you braid the incompletely dreaded bits as you progress). You can also do the dread-extension thing. Those can look pretty good - to my eye, anyhow.

www.dreadheadhq.com seems to have some decent advice. (Didn't read the whole site, though.)

Growing hair out sucks. I'm a barette and hairband girl when I go from short to long, but it still sucks. The really goopy Fudge products can make some kinds of awkward short hair look cool - you can style it a lot without it getting too stiff.

How long is your hair RIGHT now? I'm growing mine out from having shaved my head after I decided to get rid of my dreads. I now have extensions, but I had to wait till my hair was about 2 in. long to get them. When I first decided to get dreads, I tried dread extensions first to see if I even liked how they looked. I did, so I got a dread perm--they make dreads, then put on the perm solution. It speads up the process a lot. You leave the salon with dreads! They aren't hard and "locked" yet...that takes a while. I think having them waxed and spritzing them with salt water helps harden them.

    good luck!

It was shaved pretty short in the back and longer on top last time I got it cut. The longest of it is probably 3 or 4" right now, and the shortest an inch or so. It's at that annoying phase where I can't quite tuck it behind my ears, but it's all flopping in my face and making me crazy. Putting a motorcycle helmet on only makes it worse.

The idea of a dread perm doesn't sit quite right with me, even though I've seen it done. I don't know why.
