the intensity of reds is only about three weeks worth for almost every color red you can find. Reds are the most difficult color to retain. I would recommend using a clear conditioning glaze over the color to seal it in for a couple of weeks stretching out the intensity level. Also using John Frieda's color intensifying shampoo in red.

It all depends what color you start with, but if you have light enough natural color you can use a permanent red color from a box and then use special effects over it (after you process it and rinse it and dry it). I do hair for a living and in my experience special effects and manic panic fade the most evenly. I only wash my hair when it starts getting greasy, like every three days. The rest of the time I wear a shower cap. Even hot water will fade the color. Red is my favorite, but it"s VERY high maintenance!

Have a professional get Matrix redlights in Red Violet. I think it is the brightest red that professional hair dye comes in. My hair is bright as hell red with dark streaks. Also, you really just have to resign yourself to not washing your hair as much as you normally would. Get a haircut that looks hot when it's dirty ;)

someone had given me some great advice on purple....they said that if you mix your hair dye ( the pre mixed type that can be stored for some time without having chemical problems, so basically a staining type of dye) with your conditioner (about a 60%/ 40% split) about once a week leaving it in for about 5 minutes it keeps your color on top of things for longer..

Schwartzkopf is very specialized- they have a whole setup and their color is not poured or squeezed out. It is pressurized. So basically no you cannot buy it on the side. Bummer huh? Enjoy your color!

i have a question, how bright is nuclear red? my friend bought me a bottle not knowing it was extremely bright and now i'm thinking of a way to make it a darker shade of red (something like this: http://www.amphigory.com/blood-redhair01.jpg) but of course, it's blood red, not nuclear. :( since i have black hair, does bleaching it a little (to make it light brown) make the red darker? or will it be just as bright? sorry for bothering it's just that you've used the product and i was really curious. goldwell elumen. the colors can go from screaming red to more subtle auburn tones, they don't use peroxide, and they last forever. one client of mine likes really bright copper, i used her as a model for the elumen class, and the color lasted 9 months before she felt the need to re-do it. we still had to touch up her roots, but everything else lasted like crazy. only downside to it is that it won't cover grey, so you would want to use a permanent color and then go over it with elumen. also, you can't get elumen at a beauty supply. you'd have to go to a stylist who is certified to use it.

Magma - By Wella (off scalp only, good for chunky hilights over a less dramatic red or whatever you like..) Schwartzkopf Igora Royal- Double Pigmented Red Series Dyes 6-888 is truly a bright red! Don't use a high volume peroxide or any red dye will fade. If your hair is not light enough (level 4 or 5) to get to a level 6 using 10 or 20 volume peroxide, then prelighten your hair first. So, if you have dark brown hair level 2 or 3 using bleach or a blonding cream prelighten enough to be about a 6 or 7. It will be an ugly orangey brassey color after the prelightening. Then use the double pigmented red colour of your choice with a 10 volume peroxide. Also, using red enhancing shampoos and conditioner, or semi permanent glosses inbetween helps. Leave In Conditioner that has sunscreen to protect your color will help a great deal. I don't know if your hair has been pretreated or what kind of condition it is in so be careful!! If you don't know about hair color levels it is like the gradient between lightest blond and black. Black is 1 and Lightest Blonde is 10. I think the Wella site has tutorials on there if you want more basic info on how color works (the info can be applied to pretty much any brand, since it is basically a color theory primer). I can't remember if you have to give a cosmo license number to access that or not, just try anyway. (-; Good luck. Jeannine

Nutriesse did not work well for me (the colors I tried were nothing like the box and faded into weird muted colors), but I love 100% Color. It doesn't last very long on me, but the reapplications are not time consuming. I really like #660 "Intense Auburn".

i'm loving garnier. i thought i would be disappointed, but it was on sale and my roots were popping so i figured what the hell. i used some dark mahogany one in the green box that came out nice dark purply red and two weeks later its only a tad lighter. i would imagine their 100% color line is good too. i'm stoked.

Red is indeed the color that fades the fastest. If you really want to keep it the same shade you have to re-dye at least once a month. When I used blood red I really packed it in, and so it was quite dark to begin with, so after a couple of weeks it was a great color.

according to my hair dresser red is one of the hardest shades to keep in your hair. :-( she tried pro-colors, but none met my wild / brightness standard... If you want really bright - I'm not sure there's any where to do it permanantly... i dyed mine special effects nuclear red for about 6 months - my secret - make a mix of color & conditioner and use it at least once a week to keep your color vibrant between dyeing. you likely will stain your hands, so use gloves or keep a loofah in the shower! i still had to re-dye every 3 weeks or so. I found blood red lasted longer since it was less vibrant...

Ahh... I can see that problem. I have ridiculously thick hair but after constant dyeing it does get quite damaged, and that's where the conditioner helps as well. You can also edit your posts by hitting back and submitting again.

interesting! I had my friend do my hair the other day in two shades of bright reds and its BEEEAUTIFUL! But she used professional colors. And she told me that most hair dye you can get at wallgreens is crap, not because of the quality, but because they tend to be WAAAAAY to strong (they have to be able to dye dark dark hair) for most people and actually can damage your hair if you have fine hair like me. I dinnae know that!

I use a ridiculously rich conditioner, L'oreal's nature therapy mega moisture, comes in a yellow tub with an orange top. After shampooing, squeeze out as much water out of your hair as possible, put conditioner on, and (because I have long hair) tie your hair up in some sort of bundle. Leave in for 5+ minutes, and rinse WELL (shower floor may get slippery). I use it every time I wash my hair. I dyed with Special Effects blood red about five months ago, and my hair is still dark pink.

I use Feria professionals color # 666, and it's really pretty for the first few days, then it fades to a normal bla red. I've heard the Redkin Reds are really great, but have yet to find a way to buy them.
