I am very interested in experimenting with older hair fashions. I fear my hair is way too long to do marcelle (finger) waves, but I am wondering what sort of effect you can get out of setting hair up in rags to get waves or curls. I know next to nothing about this old timey style, nor how to do it properly. Has anybody here ever tried it?

Sun, January 23, 2005 - 8:36 PMI was going to say -- don't bother if your hair isn't at least a bit wavy naturally (or with a perm). But I see they covered that in the link you posted.
I used to do marcelle waves a lot when I had short hair (but with clips rather than fingers), when my hair is slightly longer (shoulder length or longer), I like doing rag curls. The latter is great for messy wild curls, and it's so effortless (just roll mostly dry hair up in strips of cloth).
For curl-enhancing lotion, I really love Bumble & Bumble's curl conscious. I stumbled onto it when I was in Dallas during summertime... my "sorta" curly hair became a frizzy mess. It's really great for managing curly or wavy hair, without trying to suppress the curliness.

Re: tying it up in rags
Thu, January 20, 2005 - 11:56 AMMy hair is totally straight. I wanted it curly when I was a kid, but no matter what my mom did, it wouldn't take a curl. Finally one night she coated it in some sort of product and tied it up in rags. I was too young to remember the specifics of when she did, but I remember that it was absolutely perfect when I woke up and took out the rags! Of course, the moment I even looked at a hair brush, all the curls fell out. I learned to just enjoy having full, straight hair. :) -

Re: tying it up in rags
Sun, January 23, 2005 - 8:33 PMSounds like fun. I will have to try it out and I will post back about the exphairoment. You are lucky you have full straight hair! My cannot decide whether is wants to be curly, wavy or just plain frizzy. Sometimes it even goes straight but for the odd cowlick. Depends upon the weather! -

Tue, January 25, 2005 - 11:20 AMHow much hair do you put up in one rag? Like an inch section or more, or does it matter? I've always wanted to try this! -

Re: tying it up in rags
Tue, January 25, 2005 - 10:19 PMMy hair is pretty fine, so I can get away with around 2" x 2" sections for each rag. If your hair is thick, you probably want to do smaller sections. For fine hair, I find that store-bought soft curlers work better than literal rags -- they have a puffy center with bendy ends that fold in. (Rags fall out of my hair very quickly unless my hair is wet or I use tons of product).
Speaking of that, I get the best results when I roll the curls when my hair is very slightly damp, then let my hair finish drying while in curlers. It also works okay to towel-dried hair, though I usually have to finish drying it (while still in curlers) with a hair dryer. On dry hair, unless you use styling product, you're probably going to see very little results.
