manic panic vs. special Fx?

topic posted Mon, March 21, 2005 - 5:05 PM by  jεnnalεx
got a preference for your favorite bold color hair dye? which one lasts longer? which one has the best color? what would you recommend? is there something else besides either of them?

I've only used manic panic, but thought I'd check in here for a new perspective.

I prefer Manic Panic gel-- the stuff in bottles. It seems to last longer than the creme-- the stuff in jars.

SpecialFX doesn't have quite the right color for me, so it isn't a contender. I hear good things about it, though.

i swear by special effects. but honestly i think it's a hair thing, some brands work better for different people. my beau has tried pretty much everything and his fav brand is punky colors. i have tried fudge, manic panic, & punky colors, but still prefer special effects. i tried a bunch of colors and now use nuclear red as my primary color.

the secret to keeping my hair really vibrant... adding color to your conditioner (maybe 50/50) and use 1 -2 times a week between coloring. it really helps maintain the most vibrant shades

I have found that Jazzing stays in twice as long as any other hair colour product, unfortunatly the Ruby red is a bit orange for my daily wear, it a nice change every now and again tho.

              Hey Always Red,
What's the color that you have ony our hair in this pic.. is that jazzing? If so, what color, and how long did it last.. I ask because at least on my computer it doesn't look orange.. although, I prefer orange to the nasty fuschia color my hair just faded to after 2 weeks. I had it colored yesterday, but they are 3 relatively natural tones, and not as bright as I'd like. at Fae's suggestion I am thinking of using S. FX to brighten it up.. I have never used it.. my hair is bleached under layers of crappy red, should I re-bleach, or proceed without caution?

Hi. The colour is Fudge but i cant remember the name. The picture is old as i dont have dreads anymore but still have the red. a suggestion for constant non fading colour is to have dreads coz you ever wash it out!! Fudge is as good as any others on my hair; faded by a week, looks crap after two. I also prefer the orange to anything even nearing pink - i hate pink.
Do you use the colour that you put the peroxide creme in? coz if you dont i would highly reccomend it for ease. I use L'Oreal excellence high colour highlights with 40%, the colour doesnt last that long but its nice and easy, then i just touch up with M.P or Jazzing or what ever i find in Sallys that week. I also use red shampoo and conditioner everyday (yes i have to wash it everyday) called Quantum Reds. i think it helps a little and its not over priced like some red shampoos can be.

          umm...
my friend got me nuclear red by mistake (i was looking for a darker red like, blood red or something) and surfing online for pics, i noticed that nuclear was really bright.

i was wondering how you were able to make it that dark...?
i want my hair to be that shade (if not a little darker) but i'm afraid to use the nuclear red right away because i don't want a shocking type of red. @_@

          my hair is black, btw.

          any advice?

I *really* like Punky, unfortunately they do not have many colors I'd use (I'm kinda past my blue or purple days). I wish they had better reds and pinks -- the ones I've tried have been less than flattering. It's my favorite dye though and lasts so well that I once fried my hair off trying to get it out when it did not fade AT ALL after a couple of months.

Special Effects does not last well on me at all, yet it does for everyone else I know. Cremes (punky and even manic panic's creme) seem to work a lot better for me than more fluid gels. Maybe it's something to do with hair texture or porousity?

what kind of hair texture do you have? mine is baby fine.

medium, not too fine, very straight, somewhat damaged, although the stylist said it's not bad at all, a little fried at the ends, but I just had her cut most of that off, that seems to be where the color fades fastest. I just spent 40 bucks on pureology shampoo and conditioner.. feeling sorta lame about that, but oh well, anybody have good luck with that, or should I try something that is for red hair, not just dyed hair?
          • Re: manic panic vs. special Fx?

            Mon, April 4, 2005 - 8:21 PM
i use pureology and do really like it... i buy mine on ebay and it's a lot cheaper - i think i got 2 of the 32 ounce for $60 including shipping, considering the conditioner is about $40 retail, it was a good deal.

i recently picked up the new john freida radiant red color shampoo and conditioner and it initally seemed to pull out a lot of color, but seems to be ok now... my hair's pretty soft too - it seems cheaper than pureology - but ounce for ounce i'm not too sure...

              Sat, April 9, 2005 - 6:30 AM
$40??? where? i use pureology too, and i get them from my stylist for 25 ea. for shampoo and conditioner...

also, as to which brand: i use punky, sfx, manic panic, and raw color, all. each one does different colors better. for example, raw has the brightest neon red i've ever gotten, with hot rod red, but no good blues, and sfx's greens are crap, but their blue-haired freak and purple passion are in my hair right now. it took alot of time and experimenting, but i have a palate assembled in my bathroom that works really well, and i custom blend colors alot. the last green i did was punky yellow and sfx fishbowl to get a neon tennis ball green. it looked really good against the purple...

new to the tribe here but had to pop in! SFX has the best green I have ever used! I am wearing it now actually, the color is great, it last and lasts adn lasts adn when it DOES fade, it doesn't get all gnarly.

I like SFX in general over the others, I have tried Raw, Fudge, Punky, Manic Panic, and 2 other ones whose names I can't remember... SFX is my fav.

Where can I find manic panic and special FX? In a drug store, or at a beuty supply store like Sally's?
    • Re: manic panic vs. special Fx?

      Mon, March 6, 2006 - 2:37 PM
Thanks for the info. I will look for them at Sally's. Hot Topic is always too crowded and the hair products are at or behind the counter. Hard to browse:-) But nice to know that they carry them when Sally's out of the shade I want.

I've only tried Jazzing, and it's semi-permanent only if you heat treat the hair. I still haven't found the exact shade I like. But so far I liked Cherry Cola. The color you see me in my picture here is a mixture of Cherry Cola and Fuschia Pink.

the only brand of wild color i've seen at Sally's is a brand called Beyond The Zone - we tried and was AWFUL! the worst color i've ever used, it was out in just about a week! i just check Sally's site and it does't look like they carry manic panic at all...

i really highly would recommend buying special effects... you can but it (or even manic panic) a ton of places online and some of your local independent beauty stores may carry it or be able to order it for you. If you can't get it locally - goodgoth.com has pretty low prices for it...

Beyond the Zone!! Thats the other one I tried, it was HORRIBLE!! The color was bad and didn't stick at ALL

maybe i am thinking Punky COlors at Sallys... I know that the one up here has one of the two brands... occasionally they have fudge too.

Wow, so much info... appreciate it!

Since many of the people recommend special FX, I think I will try it. The only fear is that it's permanent color. Is the color on the box pretty much the same color when you actually apply on your hair?

And thanks for the info on Beyond the Zone. I think I will avoid it then. I like punky colors too. Thanks for the info on online sources too. I wouldn't have found them because I usually don't visit goth sites - I'm more into Metal. I do love Goth Metal though. I think people dye their hair black. A long time ago when Rozz Willams was still alive, I went to see Christian Death because a friend was touring with the band, and I was so out of place:-)

Well, Special FX is not permanent, its either semi or demi I forget. It DOES last a long time, the color fades out though. To keep it bright and vibrant, you have to redo it every so often (frequency depends on the color you pick and how anal you are about your color brightness.)
              • Re: manic panic vs. special Fx?

                Tue, March 7, 2006 - 4:36 PM
also if you're going to dye a red shade - they are the quickest to fade out, so you won't have to worry about it being too permanant...

                  Tue, March 7, 2006 - 9:16 PM
Thanks for the info. OK, if sounds like it lasts for a while, but not so persistant if I don't like the color. Maybe that's exatly what I'm looking for then. I'll get a haircut first, and go look for some Special FX:-) I look like a pink haired troll now.

Just went to Hot Topic. They had all kinds of RAW, and some Manic Panic, but I didn't see any Special FX. Manic Panic selection was horrible. They had green, fluorescent pink and Black in a jar.

Has anyone tried Raw Permanent hair color? I've been considering trying Fire Red or Black Cherry.

I've only tried Raw once, in green, I liked it better than manic panic I think. I have a friend who only uses that though.

i swore by special fx until i tried raw. raw is more expensive... but it lasts a lot longer for me! i love their purple passion.

now remember, everyone's hair is different! My hubby looove punky colors it lasts for a month in his hair - it falls out in a week or two for me. It also depends on the shade - some have a longer staying power. I've tried pretty much everything... punky, raw, fudge, special fx, manic panic... and overall I'd recommend sticking to raw or special effects.

hey everyone, I just joined right now and thought i would chime in about temporary color.
I do hair and my hair has been colored for the last 15 years. I use Special Effects. I am going to check out RAW though (thanks for the tip). In Special effects I have used the Sonic Green, Blue Velvet, Electric Blue, Deep Purple, Pimpin Purple, Burgundy Wine, Blood Red, Dervish or is it devilish?, Cherry Bomb, Atomic Pink and have also used the mixer/toner. Good stuff. Reds are always hard to keep up, but the suggestion of going darkest red is good. Lots of pigment!
Right now I use burgundy wine and deep purple. Love it!!!!!
Anywho- there are wonderful comments and suggestions in here. Thanks for sharing

Thanks everyone, for your advice! I couldn't find Special FX. So I went with Manic Panic in a jar. I was pretty happy that it wasn't runny like Jazzing, and it colored pretty evenly. Now I have to see how long it lasts on me. I'm not quite content with the color I used. It was Pillarbox Red. It looks a little different from the hair sample they had at Sally's. I think I will try the Vampire Red next time. Or maybe I will try the Raw or continue looking for Special FX. It's fun experimenting!
